warming cocktails for autumn days

A cocktail in a Pall Mall Lady Hamilton Glass
The Widow's Kiss is a classic cocktail for autumn

Let's face it, it hasn't been much of a summer but even when it was bucketing down, we kept holding out for sunshine, mixing up jugs of summer cup and sipping glasses of Aperol Spritz. Sadly it was all to no avail and now September's here, we're going all out for autumn. We've just finished photographing our autumn glassware collection which, of course, meant we had to mix a few autumnal cocktails for styling purposes. Oh, okay, we also drank them but that's all part of the job. Anyway, here are a few of our favourites.

Widow's Kiss

A classic cocktail from the end of the 1890s, the Widow's Kiss has a lovely autumnal flavour thanks to the calvados and with Chartreuse, Benedictine and a garnish of maraschino cherries, it ticks all of our boxes.

45ml Calvados

15ml Yellow Chartreuse

15ml Benedictine

A Dash of Angostura Bitters

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a Luxardo maraschino cherry or two.

Bramble

Moving from a cocktail from the 1890s to one from the 1980s, the Bramble is a modern classic created by Dick Bradsell at Fred's Club in Soho. It's essentially a riff on a gin sour with the tangy addition of blackberries.

45ml Dry Gin

30ml Freshly-squeezed Lemon Juice

15ml Simple Syrup

10ml Creme de Mure

A Handful of Blackberries

Muddle the blackberries in the bottom of a glass and fill with crushed ice. Shake the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup over ice and strain into the glass. Drizzle over the creme de mure and garnish with a blackberry and slice of lemon.

Blackthorn

Like the Bramble, the Blackthorn celebrates the bounty of the British hedgrow but this time with sloes. It can be made with Irish whiskey or gin. We're rather partial to this gin version borrowed from Difford's Guide.

30ml Dry Gin

30ml Sloe Gin

7.5ml Dry Vermouth

7.5ml Red Vermouth

1 Dash Angostura Bitters

1 Dash Orange Bitters

Stir all of the ingredients over ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry or slice of orange.

Calvados Sidecar

The Sidecar is another classic cocktail often quaffed at Muddled HQ. Here, we've given it an autumnal makeover by substituting calvados for cognac.

45ml Calvados

30ml Cointreau or Triple Sec

15ml Freshly-squeezed Lemon Juice

Optional: a cinnamon sugar rim

Shake over ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a slice apple or lemon twist.

If you're looking for the perfect glass to serve your new favourite cocktail then do check out the Muddled Vintage autumn collection here. We've curated a wonderful selection that includes lots of smoky and amber glass, gold decoration and the odd pheasant design. From mini coupes to jug and glass sets, there's something to suit every home bar style.
