Cool cocktails for hot days

There's nothing we like more at Muddled Vintage than cooling down at the end of a hot day with an ice-cold cocktail. There are some wonderfully inventive summer drinks out there but we usually find ourselves sipping a classic. Here are some of our favourites.

Ingredients for a negroni cocktail on a tray
The negroni conjures up the spirit of an Italian summer

Negroni

A summer classic perfect for the passeggiata whether you're in Pisa or Penzance.

30ml gin

30ml Campari

30ml red vermouth

Stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass. Serve with an orange wheel or twist. We also like to add a squeeze of orange to ours.

Americano

If you find the bitterness of the negroni off-putting then why not try its longer, more refreshing precursor, the americano?

30ml Campari

30ml red vermouth

Soda or sparkling water

Fill a glass high ball glass with ice, add the Campari and vermouth, top up with soda water and garnish with an orange wheel or twist.

Elderflower Martini

an elderflower martini cocktail
Nothing says summer like elderflower

A dash of elderflower liqueur gives the classic martini a summer twist.

60ml vodka or gin

15ml dry vermouth

15ml elderflower liqueur

Stir with ice, strain into a chilled coupe and serve garnished with lemon or mint.

NB This can be a bit sweet for some tastes so reduce the amount elderflower liqueur accordingly.

Margarita

Sharp and refreshing, the Margarita is a Muddled Vintage favourite.

50ml tequila

25ml Cointreau

25ml freshly squeezed lime juice

Shake the ingredients and strain into a margarita glass or on the rocks. We love ours with a salt rim. You can add chilli flakes for an extra kick.

The porto tonic is a great summer alternative to G&T

Porto Tonico

This is Portugal’s answer to the G&T. It’s incredibly easy to make and is utterly refreshing on a hot day.

45ml white port

90ml tonic

Pour the ingredients into a high ball glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange wheel and/or a sprig of rosemary.
