The cocktail shaker has a long history, dating back in its current form to the 19th century. These days there are two main types of shaker: the three-piece shaker which has its own strainer and is usually made of metal and the Boston shaker which consists of a glass and tin. You will need a separate strainer if you choose this type of shaker.
For everyday use, we prefer a Boston shaker, saving our fancier shakers for special occasions.
